🇯🇵 Do I Need an Onward Ticket for Japan?

Possibly — proof of onward travel may be required.

Official sources · last checked 8 October 2026

The rule

Japanese law does not list a return ticket among the conditions for landing, but the immigration inspector can refuse anyone judged likely to become a burden on the state, and a passenger refused landing is flown back at the airline's expense — which is why airlines ask visa-free passengers for a ticket out at check-in. Carry one that leaves within your permitted stay (your permitted stay).

What counts as proof: A return ticket · Or a ticket leaving Japan for another country

When it may be checked: Airline check-in · Immigration inspector on landing

Recommended: have proof available before departure.
